Cats and Quality of Life Exams

by | Oct 31, 2022

Being a cat parent is a wonderful adventure. Unfortunately, it also comes with a lot of tough decisions. This is why, as cats age, it becomes even more important to take them in for regular checkups and quality of life exams, if needed. For us, the most important exam in a cat’s life is their quality-of-life exam. Here at The Cat Hospital, we understand the special bond between you and your cat, and we are dedicated to providing the best possible care for your furry friend.

What is a Quality-of-Life Exam?

A quality-of-life exam is an end-of-life exam that assesses all aspects of your cat’s health, from their physical condition to their behavior. During this exam we’re specifically looking for changes or declines in the enjoyment your cat gets from their life. We will also perform a thorough physical examination while paying close attention to any signs of pain, lumps or muscle loss. These exams are important when making choices about the treatment of diseases versus choosing euthanasia. As long as quality-of-life is good for your feline family, then our goal is to keep them with you for as long as possible.

Why Are Quality of Life Exams Important for Cats?

As cats age, they are more likely to develop chronic health conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Many of these conditions can be managed effectively without effecting the quality-of-life of your cat. Quality of life exams give us the opportunity to assess the effectiveness of their current treatments and the progression of any diseases. With these exams we know that we are following the best course of action for your cat and you.
Quality of life assessments help with making the choice for end-of-life or continuing treatment. These exams allow us to stop the suffering of our patients or avoid an unnecessary euthanasia. If you have any concerns about your cat’s health or quality-of-life, please don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us today.
